Whew! Talk about a short honeymoon! The Obama administration woke up to a dispiriting reality on Tuesday, January 19: the prospect, indeed very reality, of losing a majority of votes in the Senate. As you, know Scott Brown swept to an astonishing victory to capture the seat held for four decades by Senator Ted Kennedy, who died last summer. While it remains the sincere desire of The Village Report.Net that the Obama administration be successful, we have to wonder loudly whether priorities have been misplaced. To date we are saddled with the fact that banks, auto giants and others have been bailed out of the lingering effects of a bad economy, but the man on the street has yet to receive any significant help in terms of a job. Mr. President, can you spare a job? I do believe that our health care system is in dire need of reform and I salute the president for taking on such an ominous task. I also, believe, however, that either the Obama administration has not done an adequate job of explaining the urgency of health care reform now or there simply are more important priorities that need our attention. At the top of that list is the raging unemployment which proverbially leaves white America with a cold and black America with pneumonia! For the past year the unemployment rate in the black community has crept steadily upward, with an equally vicious impact on black men – at last count hovering around 20%! Will we ever learn anything from the adage which permeated an election cycle many years ago: It’s the economy, Mr. President!
